It is possible to gain high search engine rankings by using free methods however it is a very time consuming job.
Do not use link farms, you may be penalised by the search engines as their algorithm’s will detect the use of them.
As well as directories and article sites, add Web 2.0 techniques to your link building strategy. These prove to have quick results and are increasingly important, not to mention many have very good pagerank themselves.
