If you are a fan of Henry David Thoreau’s writings, you’ll delight in visiting Walden Pond State Reservation in Concord, MA. Yet even if you are not familiar with Thoreau, Walden Pond and the surrounding woods are a serene and picturesque place to spend time in a beautiful natural setting. Walden Pond is a great place to spend a day picnicking, swimming, and hiking. There are 5 miles of trails throughout the woods at the Park, and you can visit a replica of Thoreau’s cabin on your walk. If you visit Walden Pond during the winter months, trails are open for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. The Pond is stocked yearly if you are interested in fishing. Maps of Walden’s hiking trails are available at the Visitors Center. On a walk through the pristine woods at Walden Pond, it is easy to understand and appreciate how Thoreau became inspired to create his famous book, Walden. Today the woods appear much as they would have during Thoreau’s time, and you may even spot some species of wildlife and birds that would have populated the area during his stay. Interpretive staff on site offer guided tours, and several special programs are held at Walden Pond yearly.
