Hiking Alone In Safety

By admin | August 9, 2008

If you are anything like me then you probably think nothing about slipping into your favorite Asolo hiking boots, grabbing your backpack and heading out for a day’s hike alone but, if also like me, you have ever found yourself off the trail and lost with darkness approaching at the end of the day, you will also know that your first priority when heading out for the day must be safety. I learnt my lesson early on and now top of my list is to make sure that I always tell someone I can rely on exactly where I am going and when I expect to be back. In fact, I go further than that and actually leave them a map of the route I will be following marked to show where I expect to be at certain points in the day. I then give them the telephone number of the local ranger station in the area I am visiting and tell them to report me missing if I have not checked in with them by a certain time. As an added precaution these days I also leave a detailed copy of my route in the car and give them details of my car and tell them where I will be parking it so that the rangers can get access to my route as well if they need it. All of this might seem like a lot of bother but believe me it gives you a wonderful feeling of comfort to know that if anything does happen then it will not be too long before someone comes looking for you.
