English saddles - Sidesaddle

By admin | June 5, 2008

Some consider riding side saddle an art form and a learned skill. Originally designed for women who wore long skirts and were forced to not sit straddling a horse due to social mores, the sidesaddle was used between the 14 and 19th centuries.

Now they are used mostly for show, parades and other special events.

A form of English saddles - the side saddle has two pommel horns for balance even while jumping over obstacles like fences and creek beds.

With a sidesaddle the rider sits with both legs to one side of the horse while still facing forward on the horse and is something that may require much practice.
