I’m old enough to remember some of the earlier printers we used with our computers and they were noisy and the quality was poor but they did the job and I don’t remember them as being expensive to use. Times have changed and we now have top quality ink jet printers which are cheap but very expensive when you buy replacement inkjet cartridges to reload with ink.
The manufacturers of these printers seem to sell the printer cheap and hope to make a lot of money selling replacement inkjet cartridges for the life of the printer and I have seen it said that the ink is more expensive than gold.
You can buy alternative manufacturers replacement inkjet cartridges and these have proved a lot cheaper and perfectly good in my experience.
